Just because a product says yogurt or greek yogurt does not mean that it is healthy for you.  Becoming a label reader can ensure that you are eating healthy. The FDA(food and drug administration) requires food companies to put ingredients on the label which is perfect for us as the consumer. Please be aware of what you are putting in your temple(body) before doing so. Many yogurts have additives such as aspartame and high fructose corn syrup. I picked up a container of Activia at the grocery store which is advertised for it’s amount of good bacteria  this week and it has aspartame in it which you are probably aware can be very harmful to your health in the long run. Please become label readers so you know what you are putting in your body. Greek yogurt can be a lean source of great protein when the right brand and type is chosen and I am going to tell you all about it today.


Greek Yogurt

 Susan Bowerman, assistant director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, explains the popularity of Greek yogurt, “It has all the benefits of a high-quality protein without the fat and without the calories.” Anyone on a low-calorie, high-protein diet can add Greek yogurt.

Vicky Newman, director of the Healthy Eating Program at the Moores’ Center for Cancer at the University of California at San Diego, suggests you look very closely at the nutrition labels and pick the Greek yogurt that is low-fat or non-fat. The regular version or “full-fat” version can have up to 20 g of fat with 16 g coming from saturated fat. The “flavored” Greek yogurts are not too healthful either, as these types tend to be high in sugar and calories. Your best bet is the plain, non-fat Greek yogurt. Eating Greek yogurt will not  directly make you lose weight or burn fat. Non-fat, plain Greek yogurt, however, is a high-protein and lower calorie food that can be substituted for foods with high calories from saturated fat or simple sugars. Substituting high calorie yogurt with non-fat Greek yogurt is a great start in your weight loss plan.
